breaking up with keeping up
Here's a shift you can make today:
Instead of trying to increase your capacity to meet your expectations, start with naming your capacity and shifting your expectations to match.
Think about your current season of life and the space between your current capacity and your current expectations:
How much of what you're doing aligns with your current energy levels? Are you pushing yourself beyond what you can hold? Are you ignoring what is present in your life and in your body in order to serve a different agenda? In order to feel like enough?
Rewrite your belief:
The ironic twist is that too often we try so hard to be enough for others and in life in an attempt to heal our unconscious not enoughness and it comes at the expense of our relationship with ourselves. In trying to be enough we ignore ourselves when in fact, turning loving attention towards ourselves and allowing our lives to meet us where we are is what affirms the enoughness we are seeking outside.
For many who are used to living in overdrive, releasing an expectation and tuning in to true capacity might feel like laziness. When you are used to giving 110% effort dialing back to 100 might feel too slow but I encourage you to sit with the awkwardness and recognize your beliefs around who you’ve had to be and what you “should” be able to handle. It's a new habit to build and won’t necessarily feel normal in the beginning when your automatic response is always towards expecting yourself to do more.
Reminder:
Growth only happens when we are nourished. We often think we have to push harder to meet our expectations or those that others place on us, but real growth comes when we can rest, recover, and move forward from a place of fullness. We stay in capacity so we can stay in the game. Endurance, because this is not a race. Ignoring your needs and paddling ahead to keep up with your expectations will get you nowhere but burnt out and resentful that you can’t reach your goals.
Take this with you:
What does your intuition tell you about your current expectations in this season? What would you do if you trusted yourself?
